Lots of battles on this date: 1790, Battle of Izmail, Russian Army takes Turkish Fortress; 1864, General Sherman takes Savannah Ga, and finishes “March to the Sea.” 1944, General McAuliffe replies “Nuts” to invitations to surrender to the Nazis and thus begins Battle of the Bulge in and around Bastogne, Belgium.
